Awarding Winning Poet and Playwright, Ayin Adams, Brings Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. to Maui Almost 40 Years After his Death -
Kihei, Maui, Hawaii (January 2005)
(PRWEB) January 8, 2005 -- Award winning poet, playwright,
actress and filmmaker, Ayin Adams, native of Brooklyn, New York, is
most famous for her spiritually moving poetry and socially moving
independent films. Soon, she will be known for orchestrating the
first African-American production presented on the island of Maui,
Hawaii.
“A Tribute to Dr. King”, a one-act play, is written, directed
and co-sponsored by the accomplished artist, Ms. Adams. A current
resident of the island, Ayin Adams is working with The
African-American Heritage Foundation of Maui to bring this written
script to life.
“This piece marks a time in history when Dr. King was the King of
Peace and Non-Violence for both blacks and whites in America.”
Stated Ms. Adams. “His spirit will be honored through song, dance
and drums. Not only will it be a historical event, but a very sacred
one, as Dr. King’s memory should be.”
With stirring spiritual selections from the likes of Marian
Anderson, Mahalia Jackson, Joan Baez, and Peter, Paul & Mary,
the performance will certainly take its audience to the era in which
it represents. It will also include speeches by Charlton Heston,
Rabbi Joaquin Prinz, Whiteney Young, Floyd B. McKissick and many
other civil rights activists. The presentation will further pay
homage to Freedom’s Children that were beaten and jailed for what
they believed in and stood for.
“This is not just a black issue but an issue of freedom, peace and
love. There is something in this production for every living person
who walks the face of this earth, no matter their race or
heritage.” Adams decrees. “No matter what nationality, we all
deserve to be free.”
“A Tribute to Dr. King” stars Jazz Vocalist sensation, Kelly
Covington as Mahalia Jackson and a new presence to the stage, Bryant
Neal as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Bryant Neal might not be as accomplished as Ms. Covington, but
his presentation of Dr. King will more than hold its own while he is
on stage.” Says Ms. Adams about Neal. “I have no doubt in the
choice made for the role.”
The production will be performed at 6:30 PM, February 12, 2005 at
the Kamaili School, 180 Ke Ali’I Alanui Drive, Kihei, Maui. Though
the live performance will be limited to those on the island of Maui,
there are plans of having the production available on film,
post-production, for those on the mainland United States.
Ayin M. Adams studied acting in New York City, appearing in films,
stage, commercials and also traveling with stage productions. Ayin
studied speech and theater at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York
and received her Doctoral Degree at the University of Metaphysics.
